PM's Proposal For BN Club Gets Thumbs-up

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 (Bernama) -- Several Barisan Nasional (BN) component party leaders have given the thumbs-up to a proposal to set up a Barisan Nasional Club to allow direct membership to Malaysians who were not keen in joining any BN component party.

They, however, feel that the proposal needs "some" fine tuning and details worked out at all levels before its implementation.

MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel said the ruling coalition's political leaders should hold talks to reach a consensus on the said proposal.

He was speaking to reporters at the sidelines of Gerakan's National Delegates Conference in Menara PGRM here, Saturday.

When opening the conference, Prime Minister and BN chief Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi proposed that the BN open a club to allow direct participation of Malaysians who were not keen to join any of the ruling coalition's component parties.

Abdullah said the proposed club would serve as a platform for Malaysians to interact and forge better ties with the leaders.

The idea was conceived, he added, after interacting with the grassroots who supported the ruling coalition but did not wish to join political parties due to some dissatisfaction with some of them.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said those who were keen to join the BN Club should have a clean track record.

"We should scrutinise the background of the interested member first, including studying the person's track record.

"We also need to check if the applicant was previously in any BN component party or the Opposition," said Tengku Adnan, adding that he was only concerned with the implications behind the suggestion.

Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah president Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said the prime minister's call was timely, taking into account the true Malaysian spirit.

Ulasan
