Tin ore thieves mine a fortune

PETALING JAYA: They have been granted permits to extract sand in Kedah but the sand mining operators are instead illegally mining tin ore, pocketing almost RM500,000 a month.
Enforcement officials estimate that there are at least 10 illegal tin mines in the state.
Ready for clean-up: An area where tin is washed at the tin processing plant.
“It is all about making millions of ringgit every year. It is a big business for them, so they do not mind investing RM1mil to set up their operations,” an enforcement source said.
To avoid the tedious and costly process of applying for a permit to mine tin, these illegal miners would “hide” their business under the guise of being sand mine operators.
